Strain theory of crime

People can experience different kinds of strain because they lack legitimate opportunities to reach the goals of capitalist society, that is, to become successful. Because they lack these legitimate opportunities, criminal acts may instead become a possible way of meeting society's expectations. If people experience setbacks or are treated unfavorably, this triggers negative emotions which in turn can lead the individual to commit criminal acts.
